Michael is tall, tan and slender. Being a structural engineer he’s not overly muscular. He keeps his hair shaved close to the scalp. Prior to entering Fox River Michael’s wardrobe consisted of suits and ties or at most a business casual sweater or polo shirt. Since Fox River he’s had to make due with what he has, whether it’s the uniforms given to them in Chicago, the clothes he stashed for after his escape, or anything new he could find within Sona. For the most part Michael prefers to wear long sleeve shirts, covering up the extensive and detailed tattoo that covers his entire upperbody, that contained the map to Fox River, as well as other clues and reminders of his plan outside of the prison. Once out of Sona, he has his tattoo removed in order to help him remain undetected while still a fugitive.

- OUTWARD PERSONA: For the most part Michael is calm and in control. He likes to have things ordered and needs a plan for everything to feel comfortable. When pushed too far he can snap, feeling overwhelmed by the pressure around him. Although his relationship with his brother hasn’t always been strong, he would now do anything to save him and his nephew.
One of his favorite pastimes is the Japanese art of Origami. He even took an elective survey class which had a large section devoted to learning the art. He was immediately drawn to the patience and precision that learning the skill required. It focused on the details which his brain worked well. He especially enjoys constructing cranes, something he finds soothing as his brother would leave him a crane next to his bed as a sign that he was watching out for him when he was younger.
Michael has always believed strongly in giving back to the community and trying to help others. This has shown in the extracurricular activities he participated in prior to his incarceration. He helped found the service Food for Kids which provides free breakfasts to school age children, and was involved for 5 years in the Chicago Youth Outreach as a mentor, during which time he mentored over 50 inner city youth in need of guidance.- DEEPER DETAILS: When Michael was still a young child he was diagnosed with the disorder of Low Latent Inhibition. In a normal person, it would drive them insane. But with Michael’s high IQ he is considered a genius. His disorder makes him unable to block out the details around him. Where an ordinary person would see a lamp, Michael see’s all the parts, screws and bolts that hold the lamp together. He is constantly overwhelmed with a stream of input from his surroundings, unable to filter it to the background, he’s had to learn to deal with it, and use his sense of observation to his advantage.
His disorder, along with the abuse he encountered as a child also makes him have extremely low self esteem and low self worth. He takes on the blame for things that aren’t within his control, and never believes he truly is worthy of good things. This is part of what makes him try to always save people. He is very attuned to suffering around, making him extremely empathetic and altruistic. He is more considered with the well being of others than himself.

- HISTORY: Michael’s father, Aldo Burrows, left him before he was born, so Michael was raised as a child by his mother, Christina Rose Scofield, and his older brother, Lincoln Burrows. Because he never knew his father, and was told that he was an abusive alcoholic, he took his mother’s maiden name. When he was just a boy, his mother was diagnosed with, and died of cancer. This resulted in the brothers going into foster homes for the remainder of their childhood. For the most part, they were kept together, but there were some circumstances under which they were separated. Lincoln got sent to juvie hall several times in which Michael was left alone in foster care. During one such occaision, Michael’s foster father inflicted severe abuse on him, as well as locked in in a dark shed for days on end. Michael’s low latent inhibition made this experience especially hard on him. He was eventually let out by a man who he discovered had beaten his foster father to death. Michael fled the scene, not to reunite with the mysterious man until almost 20 years later when he discovered it was his biological father protecting him.
Michael was always a gifted student, graduating at the top of his class at Morton East High School in Illinois. He then attended and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Loyola University in Chicago. He went on to become a very successful structural engineer, working for the firm Middleton, Maxwell and Schaum in Chicago. While Michael became a success, his brother struggled and continued to have problems both with employment and the law. The brothers grew further and further apart. Unknowingly to Michael however, his success was due to his brother taking out a loan for $90,000 which would put him through college. Michael always believed the money was left from their mother’s insurance, something he would inherit when he was 18. he believed that his brother had merely wasted his half of the money.
When his brother Lincoln was arrested for murder, everything changed for Michael. He learned that the reason his brother was in jail was due to the money he had borrowed for Michael’s education. This weighed heavily on his conscience. Believing in his brother’s innocence, and not being able to sit back and watch him being put to death by the electric chair, Michael began devising a plan using his knowledge as a structural engineer to break him out of Fox River. He had the map of the prison, along with some other clues he would need throughout the escape tattooed on his upper body; the only way he could bring the map into the prison undetected. He married a Russian dancer named Nika Volek, giving her green card status while making a deal to have her help him from the outside.
The day after his wedding, Michael staged a bank robbery, firing shots into the air, and sticking around until he was caught and could give himself up. He pled no contest at his trial and requested to be sentenced near his home, a request that was granted, making him serve his term at Fox River, the same prison his brother was at.

When she mentioned removing the dead skin, it reminded Michael of just how serious this burn must be. He was beginning to realize that there wouldn't be any chance of recovering the blueprints from that area, it was now just a matter of how large of an area was destroyed. His overactive mind was already trying to judge if he could tell from the pain which area of the map was destroyed and how large of a chunk it was. By his estimates it was more lost than he could afford to lose, and despite the hours he had spent studying he blueprints, he couldn't be sure that he'd get it right without the tattoo.
Another thing he realized as she talked was that he had been so busy finding out what was going on that he was probably acting pretty rude towards Sara who had just been trying to help him. "I'm sorry, it may not sound like it but I do appreciate your help" He told her
"I guess next time I'm in pain I should just grab a pillow or something to scream into so I don't alert half the prison" He commented, feeling as though he was weak for his reaction. Sure he had managed to stay quiet the whole time it happened, but part of that was due to shock, though the shock didn't seem to numb very much, but when Sucre removed the shirt, he felt as if his flesh was being pulled from the bones of his body, as if he was being torn in two. He felt guilty and weak for having screamed now, but at the time, the pain was just too unbearable.
