- HISTORY: Matt Finch’s first memory is being a young child living in an orphanage in New Orleans. Not knowing anything about his parents, the only thing he had in the world was a name given to him by the priest at the orphanage and a hatred for authority figures. By the time he was 13, Matt had been in fights with every other child in the orphanage, tortured animals and tried to set a fire within the orphanage. Suffering beatings from the priests and nuns that ran the orphanage, the young teenager finally decided to escape. One night, Matt was able to sneak out of the orphanage and never returned.
As a homeless teenager, Matt lived in constant danger. He survived until he was 17 by living in abandoned buildings, stealing food and money to survive. He also developed a heroin habit which almost cost him his life when some African-American drug dealers tried to kill him for trying to steal from them. As they beat the young Matt, a white skinhead gang noticed what was going on and proceeded to save Matt. Chasing away the dealers, the gang members brought Matt to their headquarters and looked after him. They helped him get over his drug addiction and also indoctrinated him with their racist beliefs. By the time he was 20, Finch was a lieutenant within the skinhead gang (though he always kept his long hair). It was also at this age that Matt was first sent to prison.
One day, Matt and some of his cronies destroyed a Jewish shop. Matt was sentenced to 3 years in jail and was transferred to a prison in Arizona. After a couple of days inside, Matt was attacked by some black inmates. He was saved by the leader of the white inmates. From that moment on, Matt was protected by the white leader. He was however made to do things in order for that protection. After 2 years in jail, he was very loyal to his protector, who had taught him how prison worked and how to fight. One day though, the leader of the whites was attacked and killed by a black inmate that was due to be released. As his mentor died, he vowed revenge. The murderer was never charged with the crime and left Arizona shortly after that. With a year still left to serve, Matt remained a prominent member of the white gang, using the lessons his mentor had taught him. He even took to having his own lovers. Finally, the day of his release came and Matt was once again a free man. This wouldn’t last long though.
After a couple of months of tracking, Finch finally found the man that had killed his lover in a small town in Illinois. Armed with a switchblade knife, Matt burst into the murderer’s home and sliced his throat without hesitation. He also stabbed a male and a female that was in the house at the time, though neither of them died. The Southerner then fled the scene. After a month and a half, detectives finally found Matt attempting to cross into Canada in the back of a truck. Running his DNA and prints, they discovered a match to those found at a crime scene in Illinois. After 4 months, a jury of his peers found Matt Finch guilty of murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced to life without parole. Due to this, Matt finds himself being transferred to Fox River where he will live out the rest of his life.

Matt Finch hated Illinois. The weather was cold and wet, the air tasted polluted and nothing had the Southern charm the Cajun was used to. Life was going to take a while, Finch thought to himself. As he stared out of the window of the prison bus, Matt watched cars and trucks zoom past him on the highway. A hazy mist prevented Finch from seeing very far out of the window. Sighing, Matt was not used to this weather. This way of life.
As the bus crept at a steady pace toward Matt’s new eternal home, Finch relived the crime that got him hear in his head. He had committed the killing to avenge his former mentor and had no remorse for it at all. That man killed the only person who taught him how to survive. The bastard deserved worse. With shackled hands, Matt whipped the condensation from the bus window and saw the steel gates. The steal gates of Fox River. The first day of the rest of his life was about to begin.
As the bus pulled into the prison, an officer at the front of the bus yelled out order which Matt ignored. He had been through all this before in Arizona. He just wanted to get into the jail now and see the lay of the land. Finch needed to find out what was what in this jail. Who controlled what and where everything was. It was only then that Matt would put into motion the plan he was thinking of all the way through his trial, even before he knew his fate. Escape.
