Juli?nna shut the door after T. Bagwell left and leaned against it. For a moment she stood there, leaning on the door mentally shaking off the words that were said, and suppressing the shiver that wanted to run up her spine. It was hard at times to remain impersonal enough to not look at someone in horror when they were telling you things they liked to do. . . . to others.
Walking over to her desk she picked up and the file and moved to the the filing cabinet, before removing another one. This one became a bigger puzzle the more she read it.
She came to Fox River to talk to murders, gang leaders, and other high profile, or overly violent inmates. A first time offender of an armed robbery, where no one was hurt and there had not even been a hunt for him, wasn't on that list.
Still, after the riots yesterday he was on her list now. Sara had been Juli?nna's best friend since before either of them came to Fox River, and after the riots Sara had come to Juli?nna. And that was how the name, came to her line of sight. What made an inmate risk his life (or at lest his well being) to travel across a cross the prison to save a doctor they have known for so little time and get her out.
More surprising, was the connection she learned he shared with another name that was on her list.
Juli?nna heard a knock on her door and looked up at the time. She had been lost in thought and a half hour had gone by! "Come in." She stood there and watched as they 'escorted' him in.

The previous day had been eventful with the riots. And now today, Michael had been called to see a Dr. Grayson. He knew she didn't work in the infirmary and that wasn't the direction he was being escorted , handcuffed, by the C.O.. Michael could only assume she was from the psych ward, something that didn't sit well with him. He wasn't sure why they would need to speak with him. Had someone seen something that they weren't supposed to? Had Sara mentioned about him being where he wasn't supposed to be, and knowing a little too much about how to get around?
Michael knew that he had to remain calm and in control, pushing aside any worries he had as to how this visit may end up detrimental to his plan (should they decide he needed to be moved to the SHU for example). He tried to think of how this could be a good thing. If someone had discovered what he was really up to here, wouldn't they send him to the Pope, not a Doctor of any sort? He had talked his way out of many situations and evaluations before if that was how this turned out, he was sure he could do it again. He just had to make sure he quickly discovered what her angle was, and what was her ultimate goal.
The CO stopped Michael in front of one of the doors, knocking and waiting for the answer from inside. Once the female voice sounded to let them inside the CO opened the door for Michael to walk through. As he walked in he saw the blond woman standing behind her desk. He walked in a few steps, but waited to see if she wanted him to sit, or merely had a quick message to deliver. "I was told you wanted to see me...I'm Michael Scofield"

So this was Michael Scofield, Juli?nna thought as she watched him for a moment. "Thank you Travis," She spoke tot he CO, her voice coming out polished and with only a small hint of a southern accent, "If you will just wait out side for an hour or so that will be helpful." Juli?nna paused a moment, looking closely at Michael. "You can take the cuffs with you." Juli?nna stood there watching as Travis removed the cuffs (and muttered something about bad ideas) before leaving and shutting the door behind him.
"Please, have a seat Mr. Scofield." Juli?nna took her own, "I am Dr. Grayson." She always felt slightly nervous when alone with inmates, but she did her best not to show it or let her hands shake. She did not like sings of weakness shown by her. "I am here on loan, of sorts, from the FBI; I am training while studying here. My job would be profiling, both crimes and men. So in order to train I have come here to speak with some of the more notorious and violent inmates, in hopes of gaining a better understanding. While this meeting is not voluntary, I can not force you speak with me. I can promise no one other then my self will read the information I take from this. No COs have access to my files, so you do need to worry on that account. So I must ask for your cooperation in the begging." The last came out more like a question, as if asking if he was ok with this. She also wondered if he would pick on her 'notorious' and violent' comments, as he was neither.

An hour. The time frame she had given the CO definitely stuck out in Michael's mind. This was not a short chat. This was a planned visit. He kept his defenses up, but his expression remained neutral, before hearing her add that the CO could take the cuffs off. She wanted him comfortable, to let his guard down so that she could get something out of him. He was sure this wasn't just a routine chat. He was still a new inmate but he would have been directed to meet with her in his first couple of days if every inmate did this. "Thank you" He said turning his head away from the CO towards Juli?nna as she allowed the cuffs to be removed. Michael remained standing while the CO left, not sitting until she indicated so.
Michael took a seat across from her desk, listening to her introduce herself. Hearing she was FBI made Michael instantly even more curious as to why she wanted something from him. Was it because of Lincoln? He listened to her explanation. It made sense that if she were learning, this would be an excellent place to train and find an abundance of subjects to study. "Private like Doctor/Patient confidentiality?" He asked her, knowing he wouldn't say anything to incriminate himself or Lincoln but still figuring out exactly how far she went. "I have no issues with cooperating, but I'm not sure I fit your profile for what you're looking for. I'm not exactly among the more notorious or violent inmates here"

"I am not your official doctor, Mr Scofield, everything will be more off the record then that. This is just for me." When he spoke on the words that she had hoped he would pick up on she tried not to smile, but there might have been a tilt in the edge of her lips. "No, I would agree with you that you are not. When I came here, I turned in a list of the inmates I withed with speak with and your name wasn't on it. However, after the events of yesterday, I amended my list."
"Your name still would not have been on it but-" Juli?nna paused and watched him for a moment, trying to make her first impressions. She had learned often that first impressions meant the most. It could tell you thing that sitting hours with someone could not. Before they learned anything about you, before they learned how to play up to you, or suck up, the first impressions told you something real. "-I heard you were a hero yesterday."

"But you are a Doctor, Dr. Grayson" Michael said as more of a comment than a question as she said she was not his doctor. It did clarify things for him. Off the record wasn't the same as confidential. Confidential couldn't be broken, even in many court cases. Off the record only meant not publicized. She then appeared almost pleased as he questioned her reason for bringing him here, despite not fitting the profile. She was already trying to steer their conversation a certain way.
Michael didn't allow himself to react as she mentioned that this was infact about what happened yesterday. Whether it was something she saw or heard about he knew it probably had something to do with somewhere he shouldn't have been, at least one rule he was breaking. Maybe it had been a CO who had tipped her off, or even another inmate she had been speaking with who knew he wasn't anywhere near hi s cell during the riot.
Then she said it, hero. That was not a way he'd describe himself. He was the reason Lincoln was in here. He was the reason Sara almost got hurt in the riot. He was the reason for a lot of things going wrong. "I don't think that anyone was acting heroically yesterday."

Juli?nna took that as a yes, he was going to talk to her. That meant she learn things about Burrows and this man. "For the most part I would agree with you, however there is a follow co worker of mine who rather thanks you for her life." Juli?nna knew Sara was not going to tell everyone about the events of yesterday, Sara was to private for that, but she had told Juli?nna, and that was enough.
"I also have to wonder, Mr Scofield, why a man doing five years for armed robbery sees as heroic if not your actions during the riot?" Juli?nna wondered why he was down playing it. She would think he would want to build it up and beg for the attention, or use it to ask for time off of his five years or something. Why hide it, or try to pretend it was nothing?

Michael knew that walking out right now and refusing to talk to her at all would raise more suspicion than sticking around. He was good at making people believe what they wanted to. He just had to play his part for her long enough that she lost interest and went back to her focus of more violent criminals. He wondered for a moment if she had spoken with his brother. Lincoln hadn't mentioned it before, but Michael wasn't sure he would have even if he had spoken with her. Their talks lately were much more focused.
Despite knowing now that Sara had spoken with Juli?nna about what happened, Michael was not about to openly start admitting what he had done and where he had been. He knew despite helping her, he was still where he wasn't supposed to be, and was doing enough to get in trouble. He wouldn't give her the ammunition to use against him, at least not until he knew everything Sara had said and that there was no more denying it.
"What I see as heroic is a person who willingly comes to work in a place like this, to help people when they know, or at least suspect, that given the chance, that kind of behavior would follow" Michael told her. He saw Sara as more of a hero than himself.

He was avoiding the topic. It sounded as if he was answering her but it was also a topic changer. It was meant to shift the focus of the conversation to another area. Juli?nna wondered if he was modest? Could he really not want the attention? For the moment, should she let this go in order to learn more or push her luck and see if that caused him to back off this? She watched him for a moment after he answered, as if waiting for him to say more before she decided to let them move on.
Not a good begging, with in mere moments they had one topic done already. At lest she knew she could come back to that one if she wanted. "You might be surprised, Mr. Scofield, what brings a person to work here." Juli?nna knew in order to work in a prison like this, you have to have a certain mind set, you often came from a less then perfect home life, or desperate times. "Like some are surprised as to why some are in here. You don't see the bank robber type." Juli?nna said, trying to open up another area of conversation.

Michael could tell that Dr. Grayson had been expecting more from his answer. It didn't seem to be the one she was looking for, but to him, it was his answer, so he left it at that. He didn't mind if that meant a few extra moments of silence between them as she expected more. In reality his answer had been the truthful one as well. He didn't see how giving the typical inmate answers would help him in this situation, at least not with that question. He could only wait and see where she took the conversation. Was she trying to get him to incriminate himself, and turn him in to the Warden, or was she really just curious about his actions, something he knew he wouldn't give a full explanation of.
Michael watched as she tried to turn the conversation to his reasoning for being there, another piece of the puzzle that didn't seem to fit for her. He could tell already that she was more observant than most. "Some might be surprised someone with the FBI would come to a prison to learn more, its not the first place your mind goes, but you're proof it happens"

Juli?nna almost smiled. He was smart, this wouldn't be one of her normal little chats, this would be something she would have to think on more. With most inmates, you knew almost everything with in the first few moments. They talked or they didn't but they gave everything away with body language and scarism. Michael Scofield was not giving everything away and what he did give away didn't fit into the pattern she had thought he would fit into. Juli?nna picked up her pen and made a note to do a deeper background check on him.
"The FBI, specializes in crimes and criminals, one would think a prison would be the first place to go to learn being is houses criminals, and a history of their crimes." It was then she realized he did not comment on her bank robbery comments. "Somethings you can't learn in a classroom, somethings are more hands on." It left her wondering, if she asked it again, it would make her appear like she was trying to hard, and if she didn't then she risked not being able to bring it up again. "How would you suggest learning about catching criminals?"

Michael's eyes followed her movement to grab her pen. Something he said (or didn't) had already sparked a note. Though he was curious as to what she wrote, he didn't let himself obsess about it. He knew it didn't matter. This visit wasn't important to his plan. He just needed to get through it without any negative consequences, and move on.
Michael nodded at her explanation of a prison as a good place to learn about criminals. "It certainly seems fitting, but I wouldn't expect many agents to take it to that level...you must be really dedicated to your work" Michael told her, thinking she was really interested in getting firsthand knowledge and not just relying on what she was taught. Michael gave a light shrug as she asked how he'd suggest learning about criminals. "I guess this is as good a way to learn as any. But I suppose these ones are already caught too...maybe you'd want to follow one of the experts, watch how they do the catching" He suggested to her.

"Oh I will." Juliánna said about the experts, "But everyone has their own way of doing things. One person might do their job very physically. They would get their hands dirty, per say. Embrace the life fully but never over think it. While others would never leave the office but do just as much good and be jut as detailed at the same job." Juliánna explained. "Some people, could do their job while making it seem like they were not. It would appear they were doing simple tasks, but they would be moving mountains." As she was doing with him now. Studying him by the questions he asked, rather then the ones he answered.
Juliánna let the speech go on a bit longer then was needed so that way there would be nothing left to say on the topic. She made sure that she had answered all the questions he could ask so that way they could move on. "Tell me Mr. Scofield, how long to plan to avoid my questions by talking about my job?" Sometimes one had to be direct.

Michael nodded as Dr. Grayson explained about the different methods that various professionals might use to do their job. He wondered what her way of doing things would be. He thought he saw the potential for a mixture of work styles with her, but thought overall despite her simple questions he was sure that there was much more she was going after with everything she did. Nothing was by chance, she was almost as calculated as he was.
He gave a light smile as she asked how long he'd avoid her questions by talking about her job. "I've already answered them, even if they're not the answers you wanted" He told her. "But I think you'll just be wasting your time talking to me, I don't fall into the category you're studying. I can suggest some others I've seen around the yard who may be more useful if you like" He told her, not trying to be overly difficult at the moment, but just not thinking he should even be on her radar if she was interested in the violent criminals.

"I am sure you could give me some names. I have read your file. You have been on the wrong side of a few violent encounters. If you want to give me the names of the men who attacked you, cut on your person, then my all means, Mr. Scofield, give me names." Juli?nna said watching him closely, "If your not ready to give out the names, then perhaps we can talk about you?"
Juli?nna knew he was trying to keep the topic off of him but she did not know why. Not yet. She wondered if he was modest or had another reason to keep the topic of him self? Could he be afraid of what she would find out? Had he got into some sort of trouble here and was worried about getting attacked again? "You might be replying my questions, but we both know your not giving the answers. You can trust me, Mr. Scofield, nothing you say will leave this room. If it makes you feel better, I will put my pen and paper up."

Michael listened as Juli?nna already turned his words around, from offering to tell her about men who would be better for her to study, to ratting out people who had wronged him inside these walls. He knew he wouldn't become a snitch. Some of the men involved, like Abruzzi, he was now relying on to get out of here. But also he knew that snitches got killed quickly and didnt need anyone else gunning for him. "My file must be inaccurate then, because my injuries were the result of my own carelessness" He said, giving the answers that Bellick and the others had used after he had been attacked to try to cover it up.
He smiled as Dr. Grayson told him he could trust her, remembering the first time he had told Sara that and what her reaction had been. Michael hoped that after their encounter in the riot, things had changed and Sara did trust him now, but her words still echoed in his head. "I've got news for you doctor, trust means absolutely nothing inside these walls" He told her, knowing no matter what she said that once he and Lincoln were out of here, anything he said in this session would be examined.

"Yes, you seem like the careless type, Mr. Scofield." Juli?nna said softly, while he was speaking. When he spoke of trust she smiled, not bothering to hide it this time. "I invited you into my office, handcuff free. I asked the OCs to wait out side, with the door shut to allow us some privacy, and I have been very open about the reason behind wanting to speak with you. If this is not trust, then please Mr Scofield, enlighten men." She didn't say it bitter or with sarcastic tones. It came out almost as if she was enjoying this, or sharing some sort of joke.
And she was, enjoying this. She knew if she appeared relaxed, and amused instead of ruffled and annoyed he wasn't speaking with her openly then he could close up and not open up. She wasn't going to admit to the enjoyment, or even the annoyance she felt that was mixed in with it. He was very careful with his words, so it was impossible to believe he carelessly cost home self some toes. "If it makes you more comfortable, we can start small and random. How about we play 20 questions. We will keep these 20 questions short, light and mostly impersonal. For every one I ask you, you can ask one to me in return. As long as your being honest and not trying to get be talking on other inmates, I will be honest with you. If you decide you want to do this, my first one question would be, 'What is your favorite book?'?"

If this was some sort of private joke, Michael definitely seemed in on it, finding her words a bit amusing, how she thought she was showing trust. He saw it differently. He saw her techniques as manipulation in order to make the inmate's guard go down. Manipulation wasn't the same as trust, he should know. "The way I see it you judged from my file that the risk of me requiring the handcuffs was less than the possible benefit of removing them and giving me a sense of trust... and I'm not sure how open you've been yet about your reasons as we've already established I'm not your type" He said with a smirk.
"20 questions" He repeated, a bit surprised by her suggestion of such a game and her willingness to allow him to ask her questions in return. He could be untrustworthy here and stop answering her questions at any time. It would just cause him to fit the profile even more of the typical convict. But if she refused to answer, she'd lose any trust she was trying to establish with him.
Favorite book. She was starting out small and random. But he was sure even the small questions weren't really random and could tell her something about him. His personality if nothing else. "Homer's The Odyssey" He answered her, not sure it was his absolute favorite, but it was one he enjoyed. "Since you mentioned the handcuffs and the CO outside, how comfortable are you really in this situation"

She might have started off small and random but he was not. When he had reviled her 'plan' to make him feel like she trusted him she had been surprised but did her best not to show signs of it. It would not help her to prove him right, so she decided not to comment on it at all. If he had refused to play she might have, but her luck held out and he played along. She knew better then to get personal quickly, but he jumped right in as if calling her bluff. Juli?nna wasn't going to back down. Besides, the question wasn't one that would hurt her to answer.
"Not very." She admitted, however, knowing she wanted him to use detail in his answers she gave some detail first. "I have a very strong fight or flight reflex and no fighting skills." Meaning she felt ready to run very time she meet an inmate. "Your the first however, that I have asked for the handcuffs to be removed." Give an inch, take a mile; "Favorite subject in school?"

Michael could appreciate her honesty in her answer. Another psychologist may have tried to play it in a more cocky manner, that they had nothing to be uncomfortable with in this situation. The truth was she didn't know him. He knew he wasn't a violent person, but she didn't. His record showed him as a man who haphazardly fired off a gun in a public place while robbing it. Even if he didnt fit her profile for violent criminals she normally talked to, he would have expected there to still be some unease there.
Even with the easy questions she asked him, Michael made sure not to overlook anything. He tried to think of what she could get out of any answer he gave her. What would she learn about him from what he said to her. What would be dangerous for him to let out, what wasn't. If both the Warden and Sara hadn't already learned about his past occupation, something that was difficult to hide, he may have tried to avoid anything that would make him seem smarter. However he knew if Dr. Grayson didn't already know what he used to do for a living, she would probably figure it out sooner or later. "Physics" He gave her his favorite subject, though knowing his favorite single class was probably where he got to learn origami like his brother used to do for him as a kid.
"So why did you ask for the cuffs to be removed? If you're uncomfortable you could have very easily asked these questions with me handcuffed "

Juli?nna thought over his question (and answer) for a moment before answering. "Because someone has to take the first step, toward trust in order for there to be middle ground." She said honestly, "And because there is a doctor, and a very good friend of mine, who says I can trust you not to need them." It was a reminder, that she wasn't done talking about yesterday. Not by a long shot.
"If you could go back in time, and meet anyone who would it be?" Juli?nna knew these all sounded random, and there were. While she could learn little details about him (and other details about how he answered) she was mostly just trying to get him to relax, and open up. For now that was her goal. She wasn't going to push or hurry this along. She was planning to get to her answers, even if it took his whole five years.

Michael listened to Juli?nna's answer and believed it. Though he still believed there was a bit of a manipulation benefit to it as well, he knew if she didn't use this tactic with all of the inmates, there had to be something in her ready to try to believe he'd be okay without them. For that reason, and because it was who he was, not someone who tried to intimidate women, he offered her something without her asking. "For what its worth...however much you believe me, you can trust me not to need them. You don't have to be uneasy"
Michael thought through his reply to her next question more than he thought through his decision to give her the reassurance that he wouldn't hurt her. It was an interesting question. Avoiding saying someone who would have opened up a whole other can of worms for this conversation (his father), he tried to think in broader terms, someone anyone might pick, but that would also be someone he would be interested in meeting. "Maybe... Gandhi....or Martin Luther King"
