- OUTWARD PERSONA: Mara is a puzzle to herself. She has been a saint and she has been made out to be an angel. She has taken paths that have brought her nothing but pain and she has taken paths that brought her joy. She has enjoyed friendships with those both young and old. She has been the protector of those who could not protect themselves and she has been a trusted companion in moments of desperate times. She has been light in the dark for some and the darkness that swallows the light for others. She is someone that gives only enough but never completely, a life time of hurt has taught her restraint. She is cool and calm. She is emotional and unbalanced. She tries to keep to herself but feels it is her duty to try and keep peace. She has been a leader of a gang and she has been a member of a gang. She has forgotten more than most could learn. She is not old but she has seen enough to ensure her own survival inside and outside Fox River. To anyone who looks at her can see there is a story there behind her eyes. To anyone who looks at her calm and cool face and see there is many emotions she is working to hide. She is tough but she is soft, she knows the right moments to show it. Mara is a puzzle to herself.
- DEEPER DETAILS: Mara was born in a unstable home with gang and criminal back grounds. She was raised in a large family but never really knew where she belongs. She takes care of the ones she has been in trusted with but never completely trusts them with her life. She has been in love once or twice and they always ended in tears. She has had loyal friends who still get in touch when they can, but are also on the run. She is confused, she is bitter, she is angry and she is spends much of her time wondering what things would be like if she had a better home life growing up? - HISTORY: Mara's mother was the product of a peace agreement between the Forte and Callahan family's. Mara's mother decided to become the rebel of the family and soon turned up in the family way. She married Carlos so that her father would not go looking for the man who was responsible. No one ever told him that Carlos was not the father. Carlos was shot and killed three months before Christina was to have her baby. Christina died after giving birth to her daughter. She adoptive parents named the baby, Carley Christina Maraina Leeanna Halloway in memory of her mother and father as well as her great grandmother. Mara grew up in the slums of Chicago, her best friends where twins Chico and Sisco. Together the three of them would roam the streets and cause trouble all in good fun.
Mara found out about the Callahan's and the Forte's when she was in her teens. The Forte's where in Chicago so she could see them when she wanted. She would spend summers in Florida with the Callahan's. The Forte family was the ones she loved the most. Before she graduated from High School she was in custody of the Forte family and her name was changed to Christina Maraina Forte. She went to see her loving adopted family when she could and still hung out with Chico and Sisco as if nothing happened. When she finished school she decided to move down to Florida for a while, to be with her other family. Chico and Sisco went with her. Soon she, the twins and her cousins: Amanda and Sean where in business for themselves. Amanda and Sean worked at a club that their father owned running the place. Mara was a cook and the twins where waiters. After hours they where thieves and car jackers.
Life was good until Sean brought in the drugs and the man who would ruin her life in another longer story. Mara opted out of the handling of drugs, her boys went with her but she started a long and dangerous relationship with Ace who was nothing more than a driver. That ended when he was arrested for unspeakable crimes and she started another affair with her own body guard who looks a lot like Edward Norton. That ended the night they were at work in the club and there was a bust by the cops. Amanda, Sean and the twins got out alright but Mara was taken by surprise. Mara managed to get out of that with help from the Callahan family lawyer. Joe Forte asked her to come on home. She agreed and left the world of drugs behind to come back to the Fortes. Chico and Sisco would later return when it was safe and they would go to work for the Forte's as odd jobs men.
Mara returned to Florida to speak to Ace one last time before he was locked away. She did not know it but Ace has rolled on her and gave her up for a better sentencing. At twenty six years old, Mara was locked up. The Callahan's where now facing problems of their own. They thought she turned them in so they turned their back on her. With no one else to go to, she reached out to her family in Chicago. Joe Forte did all he could but could not get her released. He did get her moved to Fox River in Chicago. Though the family cannot come and see her she hears from them and the twins as much as she could. While in poisoned she has been in fights, she has been raped, beaten and threatened. She has been in Ganges and has ran a few. She has kept the faith and denied god. She has gone crazy a few times. But in the end she was allowed parole. She spent three glorious months in freedom. She was getting her life together. She was in college and she was working a normal job. Life was good. She even dropped the Christina and Forte from her name to protect the family. She took on a new name for herself. Then Chico and Sisco got in a rough place with some sharks. She tried to help them out but was busted.
Mara is now back in Fox River under her new legal name... Maraina Marlette.

Mara entered the Prison Yard for the first time in three months. She stood still and watched the other women from her unit walk pass her and she wondered if any of them remembered her at all. She wondered if she would have to start over from scratch. She crosses her arms and walked slowly across the yard to the bleachers. She casted her eyes down so that she would not have to look at anyone. She took a seat on the bleachers and stared at the fence. She was seeing nothing, nothing other than the advents that lead to this moment. She was lost in deep thought. Thoughts that seemed to come to the conclusion that if she had not spent her life trying to take care of everyone around her maybe she would not be where she was now. She knew that was wrong. Sooner or later, everyone takes a fall.
That did not make her feel any better about the mess she was in. She knew it would be a very long time before she ever saw another parole board hearing. She wondered if the twins had any idea what she had given for their protection. Mara shook the thoughts from her mind and turned to look around the yard. She knew they would not have much longer in the yard but she could not help but to feel her mind wrap around the idea that this was more home and her own home outside these walls. Here she was a part of something, here she had seen much, here she had learned the most important things about life and living. Outside these walls everything was so different and she struggled so hard to fit in with the world around her.
In some crazy way, she had hoped to get caught doing something. She had wanted to return to her old home. Prison life was not that bad once you learned to give away part of your control and allow someone else to become your own personal drill sergeant. Control was what it was all about. Mara seemed to no longer care that every day was planned in advance. With a sigh she pushes all her thoughts away, stands and starts to slowly walk the wall of the fence. Weaving in and out of the inmate population she does her best to avoid being noticed. She takes her time and study’s her fellow inmates.
Her conclusion is that there should be no trouble for her to get back into the swing of things. Then she sees that guards have come into the yard. It was time to line up and head back in. One by one they gather around and are lead back to their cells. Mara enters her cell and stands by the bars, watching the others as they too stood waiting for the doors to be closed and for life on the block to go ahead as always. One thing left to do; she gets out her notebook and pen, settles herself onto her bunk and finds a clean page to start writing. Welcome to my life…
